Thiel CS1.6 - Wonderful Speakers - HiFiFreak.in

Happy to be part of the forum! After a very long time, today I had the opportunity to visit Srinisundar's home, to audition his current setup. The audition went on for 3 hours! However, I am going to just discuss about the super performer Thiel CS1.6 now and save the complete review for a later date .

This speaker definitely sports a different outlook, besides its innovative design. Its aesthetically pleasing design may definitely enhance the overall look of one's system.

Weighing approximately 15 kg, they stand very solid with their well-constructed bases. They sport a very innovative design and the noticeable front port, which is a long vertical slot beneath the woofer, surrounded by a machined flare. Its unique design, which is a slotted bass reflex system, claims to reduce unwanted port noise and grille loading effects. The 6.5" woofer uses a 3" voice-coil to drive the metal cone closer to its perimeter than usual. This is said to increase the stiffness of the cone, pushing the inevitable breakup modes much higher in frequency than with a conventional cone and voice-coil. The 1" tweeter uses a metal dome and, like the woofer, features a short coil with a copper distortion-reducing ring, operating in a long gap. The tweeter dome is recessed slightly in a front plate with a short flare, which will increase its on-axis sensitivity to match the efficient woofer, at the expense of restricting the unit's dispersion in the top octave.

A noticeable, not a major, flaw is the connectors, which protrude considerably outside the body making it more prone to accidental damage while changing speaker positions. However, its whooping price tag of $1750-$2000 and the "ownership pride factor" would not allow the user to be cavalier.

Technical specifications:
Bandwidth (-3 dB): 48 Hz-20 kHz
Amplitude Response: 50 Hz-20 kHz +/-2 dB
Phase Response: Minimum ±10 degrees
Sensitivity: 90 dB@2.8 V-1m
Impedance: 4 ohms (3.0 ohms minimum)
Recommended Power: 50-300 watts
Cabinet Dimensions: 9 inches wide x 11.5 inches deep x 35.5 inches high
Weight: 38 pounds

In the current setup, these speakers are powered by monoblock power amplifiers connected to musical fidelity preamp. I would not go into details of the chain of components, as I would save them for a detailed review. At the very first instance, these speakers sound very revealing and natural. However, I personally would rate them to be the best choice for music, as opposed to movies.

Thank you for reading!
